Creating a Realistic Diorama from Scratch: Step-by-Step Tutorial

this is my memory when i was a kid , memory that brings me joy

🏠 STEP 1: PLAN YOUR DESIGN

  1. Decide on a scale: Common scales are 1:12 or 1:24 (1 inch = 1 foot or ½ foot).
  2. Sketch your house: Draw the exterior and rooms.
  3. List the parts: Walls, floors, roof, windows, doors, furniture, etc.


✂️ STEP 2: GATHER MATERIALS

You can use basic craft supplies:

  1. Cardboard or foam board (for walls/floors)
  2. Popsicle sticks / balsa wood (for structure and furniture)
  3. Glue gun or craft glue
  4. Scissors/craft knife
  5. Ruler, pencil
  6. Paint, brushes
  7. Decor paper, fabric scraps (for wallpaper, curtains)


🧱 STEP 3: BUILD THE STRUCTURE

A. Cut the base and walls:

  1. Use foam board or cardboard.
  2. Cut out 4 walls and a base according to your sketch.

B. Cut out windows and doors:

  1. Use a craft knife carefully.

C. Assemble the structure:

  1. Glue the walls to the base.
  2. Let dry, then glue on the roof.


🎨 STEP 4: DECORATE THE INTERIOR

Before gluing the roof:

  1. Add wallpaper or paint the walls.
  2. Lay flooring using printed paper or craft sticks.

Add interior elements:

  1. Furniture (DIY or buy)
  2. Rugs, curtains, shelves
  3. Tiny accessories (books, plants, lights)


🪟 STEP 5: ADD WINDOWS & ROOF

Windows:

  1. Use plastic sheet for glass.
  2. Frame with popsicle sticks or thin cardboard.

Roof:

  1. Use cardboard, wood, or thick paper.
  2. Paint and glue in place.

Optional: Add shingles using small cut paper or wood.

🌳 STEP 6: EXTERIOR DESIGN

  1. Paint the outside walls.
  2. Add pathways (sandpaper or gravel)
  3. Make grass using green felt or static grass
  4. Add mini trees, fences, or benches
