RV Forest Diorama: How To

Use crumpled paper for rocks, add foliage of different kinds, & incorporate all different techniques of paper craft for this one!

Landscaping is always very forgiving to make with paper, as natural things are (usually) not perfectly straight, or cut, so if you make a mistake it will blend RIGHT IN!!! with that being said I hope you all try this, I made it with my sisters and they LOVED it! (The whole family did :)))

Supplies

DSCN1557.JPG
  1. Scissors
  2. X-acto knife (If you want small details this is ESSENTIAL)
  3. Ruler (Longer the better)
  4. PVA Glue
  5. Screw-type stick glue
  6. Recycled Construction paper (Is best for its rough-natural texture)
  7. Paper board, (Or thin shoe box cardboard)
  8. Cutting surface (Anything but your moms table:))))
  9. Patients

The Base Board

  1. Cut a 9 x 8 rectangle
  2. Use strips of cardboard to close it off on all sides, make it as tall or as short as you want
  3. Reinforce the bottom, with a small strip of cardboard

Then for our base color this is UP TO YOU to chose the color, I went with a light brown color, but if I did it again, I would go with green. (I'm from New-Mexico, so I'm used to sand subconsciously, lol)

(!NOTE)use stick glue for this so it doesn't wrinkle the paper...

Surface Features

I cut out small circles from a contrasting color and applied it randomly (The best I could) to the surface. Then in Egg-like fashion I put smaller ones on a select few circles.

NEXT --------------------------

Using two different shades of green I cut out "Half cloud" shapes and glued them to the base (Using the PVA this time.)

Ignore the skinny little tree.(It was an experiment, lol)

Arboreal Plants

For our trees they are comprised of:

  1. A rounded cloud shape
  2. A brown trunk
  3. And finally a stiff piece of cardboard to enable it to be stuck into the base board

Sticking Them Into the Base

DSCN1586.JPG

Cut a small slit into the base, and stick the tree into it tightly.

This part needs to be done right, or else each tree will block the one behind it....

place them in a triangular fashion so when viewed from the front you can see at least half of EACH tree. They should look like the skeletons meme, as if they are all peering upon you looking over each-others shoulders XD

(it wont be perfect, but strive for perfection)

To make the RV you can freestyle it, or use this little template.

Its really simple, but the template does help with it a little.

For the wheels, roll a strip around a smooth bamboo sticks, and then glue them to a base of paper.

I TRIED to "weather" the RV, like a true scale modeler with an orange colored pencil but it came out looking kinda bad, lol.

Back Board, and Things

I made a simple backboard, & decorated it with mountains on top of a blue sky with clouds, I would use more toned down colors, but this is all I had, so the sky is a bit TOO BLUE.

I also made a canoe, by folding paper & Gluing the two tips together, Next I cut it to shape, folded in the sides, and creased them inwards.

I also made two water-spoons.

Leaves

Using colored pencils I essentially just scribbled over the board in select areas, I lastly cut out some small orange + yellow leaves, I sprinkled them like sugar all over the diorama, & in the end it looks like early fall... I guess.

You can keep going and add in a paper people chain, or shovels, or a fireplace, or a moon hanging!, or a sun in the background!

You can go as far as you wish I personally LOVE the project. You can also make yours with with white/grey/blue colors for a wintry scene, and add snowflakes!!!

Anyway, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! If you make something similar please share it!!!

Happy Cardboarding <33
