How is the structure's stability dependent on material type?

Hypothesis

If the material is stronger and more efficient then it would hold and support more weight because it lasts longer and is of better quality.

Variables

Independent: weight

Dependent: the number of books it takes to break, popsicle sticks, straws, aluminum foil

We know that different structures are made from different materials, and some materials are stronger, holds more books, and last longer than other materials.

Procedure

1- Build a stable bridge structure out of selected materials

2- Place structure on 2 flat surfaces leaving empty space in between

3- Add books one at a time until the structure collapses

4- Collect information based on the results

As the number of books added to the bridge increased, the bridge structure became more fragile leading it to collapse.

Based on the data collected, we’ve found that the popsicle sticks were proven to be the most efficient material for building a bridge and plastic straws were the least efficient.

Our data results supported our hypothesis because we’ve found that the strongest material was able to hold the most weight while the weakest material held the least amount of books.

What is the importance of this research to humans?

This research can benefit toy builders to know which materials are best for supporting heavy weight.

How can it be applied in practice?

We can create smaller models, and draw sketches.

What did you learn from this research?

We learned that some materials are stronger than others and through and in this experiment we found that the wooden sticks are the strongest. The material that is better for supporting bridges can be used as a future reference in deciding which material to use while building.

How did you use your project as Service as action?

This project benefits the community by helping toy builders and companies know which material is best for support.

Evaluation

1- Research skills.

We researched structures we could use for the bridge models and found a YouTube video that we all agreed on to follow for our models.

2- Self-management skills

We agreed on a schedule to zoom every week to work on the experiment and lab report so we would get the work done equally and on time.

3- Thinking skills.

We brainstormed ideas for our science fair experiment and found a suitable one to use then we thought of the materials that were being used, the variables, and after finishing the experiment, we evaluated our work.

4- Communication and Social (collaboration) skills

Due to covid-19 restrictions and school being shut down, we were able to use Zoom (a video chatting application) to contact each other every week to work on the experiment every week
