Simple Phone Stand

What Inspired me?

I love the simple. Greatly inspired by Bauhaus, I believe that the function over form process of both designing and making of any product is key to success. My brother requested a little, "Simple" and basic phone stand for when he is playing on his game console. I asked for specific detailing on the size, finish and style, and received no response, so I took it upon myself to design and make the most basic phone stand I could, and this is how I did it.

What will you need?

-90mm by 18mm by 30mm (this is the basic size) Pine

-Any wood saw

-Wood working file

-Sander or sand paper

-pencil and ruler

To begin the process of making this simple product, I just had to come up with a few measurements in order to ensure the physics behind the design was there. I had to make sure that the holder was long enough to make sure that the phone its self wouldn’t fall out or become unbalanced, and that the notch I was going to cut was the correct angle and thickness. All of these factors were resolved by drawing a simple triangle, going of phone height and angle, then drawing a line straight down. I then drew these measurements on a piece of pine and used the saw to get the basic, rough outline.

The next stage was actually use the saw to cut out the notch where the phone will sit. This didn’t take much time as I decided to use the scroll saw to save time and make a rough cut. I then used a small file to try to eliminate as many saw lines I could, a belt sander would be great for this, I just decided to use a file and then some 200 grit sand paper rapped around to get a much smoother finish, this process worked well but you can still see a few saw lines.

The last step of this simple build was just to sand each of the sides and corners. This is not very time consuming task due to the project being a tiny piece of pine. I used the belt sander to get a close to 90 degree surfaces as I could, the ran over the entire thing with 200 grit sand paper then some 600 grit sand paper.
