I play in a band and every year we play in a big birthday disguised party

This year's theme was 1978. We had to find a collective theme. We chose the Amoco Cadiz shipwreck and oil spill, which took place in March 1978 and spilled 220,000 tons of oil on Brittany's beaches! As I play the bass saxophone and it can sound like a ship's foghorn... or the ship's cry of agony, I was challenged to do the Amoco Cadiz. Challenge accepted in papier-mache!

But there is a drawback… there's a bit of inertia on the head, and that limits your ability to dance

Supplies

The hat is made of papier mache

To make it you need

  1. a bike or skateboard helmet to use it as a mold
  2. paper
  3. cardboard
  4. adhesive tape
  5. wallpaper glue
  6. paint

First Layers on the Helmet

To make it, I used a cyclist's helmet as a support. I wrapped it in plastic film so that I could remove it from the mold, and applied a first layer of paper glued to the helmet with wallpaper paste. I had some help, Charles was very interested in the activity

I then made a horizontal section in cardboard on which I stretched tape and fixed cardboard to make the hull and I stuffed tape to make the bulb

Cover With Paper

Then, I covered the whole thing with paper, in several layers

For the deck equipment, I again had the help of Charles

Test Before Painting

At this stage, I've been able to try it out, and you can already get an idea of what it's going to look like

Painting

Then came the painting stage. I did a first version with the red bulb like the original boat, but I thought it looked a bit too...masculine

The final version is grey
