Snap-On Cable Winder for Desk & Backpack Cable Management (3D Printed Modular Design)
🧠PROBLEM
Cables are one of the most common sources of desk and travel clutter.
They tangle in backpacks, fall behind desks, and create unnecessary friction in everyday setups.
This project explores a simple solution: a compact, snap-on cable winder that can be 3D printed and adapted to different use cases.
💡 ORIGIN
This design was created from two community-driven ideas:
- a need for a compact cable winder for everyday use
- an experimental idea of using a built-in mounting point on a modular battery device for cable organization
These ideas were merged into a single lightweight accessory that works both as a standalone tool and as part of a modular system.
Supplies
- Software: Sketchup
- Hardware: Bambulab X1C
- Filament: ABS filament
Design
The design focuses on simplicity:
- compact spool geometry
- snap-fit mounting interface
- lightweight structure to reduce material use
- No supports and no weakpoints
The goal was to create something easy to print, durable enough for daily use, and adaptable to different cable sizes.

3D Printing
Print settings:
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
- Material: PLA (recommended), PETG or ABS optional
- Infill: 15–20%
- Supports: not required
Recommended orientation is flat on the base for maximum strength and clean snap-fit behavior.
Post Processing
After printing:
- remove minor stringing if needed
- lightly test snap-fit flexibility
- ensure cable path is smooth
No additional assembly or post processing is required.
Scaling and Colors
- After the design validation we added extra depth to fit longer cables.
- We added a community credit that can be printed in another color (using AMS)
- This size is perfect to fit in the ZERO camera hole, but feel free to rescale it to meet your needs
How It Works
The cable winder uses a snap-on mounting system that allows it to attach directly to a compatible mounting point or function independently as a portable organizer.
The geometry allows:
- easy cable wrapping
- stable retention
- quick release when needed
Real Use
The cable winder is designed for multiple scenarios:
- desk setups
- backpacks
- travel kits
- minimal workspaces
It helps reduce cable clutter in both stationary and mobile environments.
Design Philosophy
This project is part of an evolving modular hardware approach called ZERO.
ZERO is a modular battery system designed with a mechanical interface that allows user-created accessories to attach and expand its functionality.
This cable winder uses one of those interfaces while remaining fully usable as a standalone tool.
REMIX INVITATION
This design is fully open and encouraged for remixing.
Possible improvements:
- larger spool variants
- magnetic attachment versions
- dual-cable versions
- travel-optimized compact designs
If you create a remix, share it with the community so others can benefit.
