Target: the Moon at the Beginning of the 20th Century

Today I wanted to pay a small tribute to the sci-fi films that we love so much. We would never have had movies like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings if it weren't for these early steps in the creation of special effects in cinema. In 1902, the French film A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune) premiered, a film that revolutionized cinema at the time and showed us how a creative mind can work wonders with very limited resources. A Trip to the Moon is considered the first worldwide box office success.

But above all, this film leaves us with an unforgettable image, and it is that very iconic image that I wanted to recreate in my first project.

Hoy he querido hacer un pequeño homenaje al cine de ciencia ficcion que tanto amamos. Y es que jamás hubiésemos tenido películas como Star Wars o El señor de los Anillos si no fuese por estos primeros pasos en la creación de efectos especiales en el cine. En el año 1902 se estrenó la película francesa Viaje a la Luna (Le Voyage dans la Lune), una película que revolucionó el cine de la época y que nos mostró como una mente creativa puede hacer maravillas con muy pocos medios. Viaje a la luna se considera el primer exito mundial de taquilla. Pero sobre todo ésta película nos deja una imagen para el recuerdo y es esa misma imagen icónica la que he querido representar en mi primer trabajo.

The first step is to soak pieces of paper in water for at least 24 hours. After that time, it is necessary to shred the paper until it is as small as possible.

Next, pour everything into a breathable cloth bag to remove excess water but not eliminate 100% of the water. It's best to do this gradually to avoid saturating the bag when you press down on it.

El primer paso es mojar trozos de papel en agua durante al menos 24 horas. Después de este tiempo es necesario triturarlo hasta que quede lo mas pequeño posible.

Despues colamos todo en una bolsa de tela que permita filtrar el agua para remover el exceso sin eliminar el 100% de la misma. Es recomendable hacerlo poco a poco para evitar saturar la bolsa cuando presionemos hacia abajo.

To create the rock, first mix the wet and filtered paper with wood glue until it forms a thick paste. Then, separately mix plaster with water until it reaches a fairly thick consistency. Once the plaster is dissolved in water, mix everything together until you create a cement-like consistency.

Para crear la roca primero tenemos que mezclar el papel mojado y filtrado con cola blanca hasta que forme una pasta espesa. De forma separada mezclamos el yeso con agua para hasta que quede mas o menos espeso. Una vez el yeso esté disuelto es hora de mezclar todo junto hasta que quedé algo parecido al cemento.

Once I have all the materials, it's time to start creating. It is important to note that if the surface you're using isn't rough, it is neccesary to lightly sand it first with sandpaper so the paste adheres well. The fun begins now! Gradually place all the material on the plate and create shapes with my hands and any small tools that I have on hand. Anything can be used to make craters and rock formations!

For me, it was somewhat difficult to create the mouth and eye from the original photograph, but the good thing is that this material takes at least a day to dry, so you can always try as many times as you want.

Una vez se tiene el material es hora de empezar a crear. Es importante señalar que si la superficie que se va a usar no es rugosa es necesario lijarlo un poco para que la masa agarre bien. ¡La diversión comienza ahora! Poco a poco añadí el material en el plato e hice formas con las manos y herramientas que había a mi alcance. ¡Todo puede ser usado para crear cráteres y formaciones rocosas!

Para mí fue algo difícil crear la boca y el ojo de la fotografía original pero lo bueno es que este material tarda al menos un dia en secarse por lo que siempre se puede intentar todas las veces que se quiera.

To create the projectile that helped the protagonists of the film reach the moon, all I needed to do was cut out some pieces of EVA foam and glue them together to make the desired shape.

Para crear el proyectil que sirvió a los protagonistas de la película llegar a la luna tan solo me hizo falta recortar unos pedazos de goma eva y unirlo con pegamento hice la forma deseada.

To finish, I only needed to mix a few black and white paint to try to give the same life that the pioneers of cinema brought to this creation. I paid special attention to the darker areas of the original image. And the most important final detail for me was adding a strip of lights around the inside of the frame, which gave it a realism I never imagined I could achieve. (Adding a small hook on the back is optional if you want to hang it on the wall).

Para terminar, solo necesité mezclar un poco de pintura blanca y negra para intentar darle la misma vitalidad que los pioneros del cine le dieron a esta creación. Presté especial atención a las zonas más oscuras de la imagen original. Y el detalle final más importante para mí fue añadir una tira de luces alrededor del interior del marco, lo que le dio un realismo que jamás imaginé que podría lograr. (Añadir un pequeño gancho en la parte posterior es opcional si quieres colgarlo en la pared).
