The Electronic Drill Pen

IMG_0236.jpeg

PCBs are tiny electronic boards that need holes for components like resistors and LEDs. But how do you make those holes? With a drill pen! I made a mini drill pen using a motor, a battery, some wires, and a switch. When I press the button, the drill spins and makes little holes in the PCB. Now I can solder the parts in and build real circuits too.

Supplies

Cardstock paper

AA batteries

pen/pencil

soldering iron

solder

pliers

tape

glue

scissors

cardboard tube

miniature pushbutton

aluminium foil

micro carbide drill bits (beware: the tips break easily!)

The Battery Pack

fold a piece of cardstock around an AA batery untill it almost fully covered. Then, mark the edges and cut accordingly.

after you do that, cut 2 small lenghts of cardstock and put aluminium foil around them.

Pushbutton Prep

use pliers to fold the pushbutton switch's legs outside.

Soldering and Battery Box Assembly

Solder the components as shown. for the aluminium foil strips, take them off and then solder the wires to the back, and then glue the aluminium foil onto the paper strips. When you're done with that, adjust the size of the main paper holder section so it is pretty tight. Then, glue the straps onto the main battery box. You can test it if you want.

When you're done, glue the components in. TAPE ALL THE JOINTS!!!!! During my test run, the button touched the wires, and it heated up. Anyways, for the pushbutton, make a hole and stick it through. after that, fold everything up and glue the joint. (fold it up, and glue.)

Final Result

Here is a video of the finished result.
