Threads of Travel: a Wanderlust-Inspired Embroidery Art Piece
Traveling has always been deeply connected to my heart. Ever since I was little, I was fascinated by different countries, cultures, languages, and the beautiful stories hidden around the world. I always dreamed of exploring new places, learning about different lifestyles, and collecting memories from every journey.
For me, travel is much more meaningful than any big achievement. It gives me peace, rejuvenates my soul from the core, and helps me connect with myself in the most beautiful way. Whenever I visit a new place, I love collecting memories and bringing back something special that reminds me of those experiences forever. Every journey teaches me something new, introduces me to different perspectives, and helps me grow as a person.
This embroidery artwork is inspired by my love for travel, memories, and exploration. The world map placed at the center represents my curiosity about discovering different countries and cultures around the world. I also added floral elements to bring softness, creativity, and aesthetic beauty to the design, while the airplane trail symbolizes journeys, adventures, and the excitement of traveling from one place to another. The decorative text and handmade details make the artwork feel more personal and meaningful. Every element in this embroidery piece reflects emotions, memories, creativity, and my deep connection with travel, which is why this artwork holds such a special place in my heart.
Recently, I visited Brazil, where my grandpa lives, and it became one of the most memorable experiences for me. I explored the country as much as I could and completely fell in love with its culture, people, atmosphere, and language. Although Portuguese originated in Portugal, Portuguese is widely spoken in Brazil, which is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world.
One Portuguese quote especially touched my heart, so I decided to include it in this embroidery artwork:
“As melhores coisas da vida não são as coisas.”
“The best things in life are not things.”
This quote perfectly reflects my feelings about travel and life. Memories, experiences, adventures, emotions, and meaningful moments are far more valuable than material possessions.
Whenever I travel somewhere, I always love collecting memories and bringing back something meaningful from that place. I did the same during my visit to Brazil, but this embroidery artwork itself has now become one of the most special memories from that journey. The Portuguese quote, inspired by the language and culture I experienced in there , makes this artwork even more personal and emotional for me. Whenever I look at this piece, it will always remind me of my grandpa, my beautiful experiences in Brazil, and the unforgettable memories connected to that journey.
Supplies
- Embroidery hoop
- White plain cotton fabric or embroidery fabric
- Embroidery threads :- black,blue,green,pink,yellow
- Embroidery needle
- Air-erasable thin tip fabric pen
- Scissors
- Cardboard sheet
Draw the Map Outline Design
The very first step of this project is transferring the world map outline onto the fabric. For this, I have two easy methods that you can use depending on the materials you have available.
Method 1: Using an iPad (The Method I Used)
Open a world map outline design on your iPad or any digital device. Increase the screen brightness to maximum so the design becomes clearly visible through the fabric. Now place the white embroidery fabric carefully over the screen and keep it stretched tightly so the outline can be seen properly from behind.
Using an air-erasable thin tip pen, lightly trace the map outline onto the fabric by following the projected design visible through the screen. This method is simple, clean, and very convenient for transferring detailed designs onto fabric.
Method 2: Using Fabric Tracing Paper
If you prefer a more traditional method, you can use fabric tracing paper. First, print or photocopy a world map outline on paper. Place the fabric on a flat surface, then place the fabric tracing paper over the fabric, followed by the printed map outline on top.
Carefully trace over the outline using a pencil or pen. The fabric tracing paper will transfer the design neatly onto the fabric, giving you a clean map outline ready for embroidery.
Stitch the Map Outline
Once the map design is transferred onto the fabric, place the fabric tightly inside the embroidery hoop to keep the surface smooth and easy to stitch on.
Now take your black embroidery thread and begin outlining the map using the back stitch method. I used two strands of black embroidery thread to give the outline a clean and defined appearance without making it look too thick. Carefully stitch along the drawn lines of the continents and continue until the entire world map outline is completed.
The back stitch gives the design a neat, elegant, and detailed look, helping the world map stand out beautifully on the white fabric.
Draw and Stitch the Floral Designs, Text, and Other Decorative Elements
After completing the world map outline, I adjusted the fabric properly inside the embroidery hoop to plan the final composition of the artwork. This helped me decide the spacing and placement of all the decorative elements for a balanced and aesthetically pleasing final look.
Using an air-erasable thin tip pen, I hand-drew the floral designs, decorative text, airplane trail, and other small details around the map. Drawing all the elements before stitching made it easier to visualize the final artwork and make adjustments according to my creative preference. Since I am comfortable drawing floral patterns by hand, I sketched them freehand directly onto the fabric. However, beginners can also use fabric tracing paper or the iPad projection method for easier tracing.
Once the final layout was ready, I started embroidering all the decorative elements. This is the most creative part of the project, where you can experiment with different thread colors and stitching techniques based on your own artistic style.
Here are the stitches and thread details I used for different parts of the embroidery:
Flower Stems: Stitched using green embroidery thread with the stem stitch method to create a smooth and natural flowing appearance.
Flowers and Leaves: Embroidered using colorful threads with stitches such as lazy daisy stitch, satin stitch, fishbone stitch, and straight stitch for added texture and detail.
Decorative Text: Stitched using blue embroidery thread with the back stitch method for a neat and elegant finish.
Airplane Trail: Embroidered using yellow thread and the running stitch method to create the soft dashed-line effect.
Airplane Detail: Created using a combination of back stitch and satin stitch for outlining and filling the design.
Finish the Back Side of the Embroidery Hoop
After completing the embroidery, I finished the back side of the hoop to give the artwork a clean and professional appearance.
First, I measured the size of the back side of the embroidery hoop and cut a cardboard sheet into the same circular shape. Then, I covered the cardboard neatly using the same fabric as the embroidery piece to maintain a matching and polished finish.
Once the cardboard backing was ready, I placed it on the back side of the embroidery hoop and carefully sewed it in place. This finishing step helps hide the loose threads and fabric edges while also making the embroidery artwork look neat, sturdy, and ready for display.
Display the Embroidery Artwork
Once all the embroidery work is completed, the final step is to prepare your artwork for display. First, gently clean the fabric if needed and make sure all the air-erasable pen marks have disappeared completely.
Trim the extra fabric from the back, leaving enough fabric to secure it neatly behind the embroidery hoop. You can use felt fabric, cardboard backing, or covered fabric backing to neatly finish the backside and give the embroidery a clean and professional appearance.
The embroidery artwork is now complete and ready to display. It can be used as:
- Wall art for home decoration, shelves, desks, gallery walls, or bedroom decor
- A decorative piece for offices, studios, or travel-inspired creative spaces
- A thoughtful handmade gift for travel lovers and embroidery enthusiasts
- A meaningful keepsake representing travel dreams, memories, adventures, and experiences
