Viking Bow and Arrow and Quiver
Hi, I’m going to be teaching you how to make a Viking bow and arrow and a quiver. I’ll tell you how I got the idea. So, every year in the winter we go to a Viking Festival, and I love it. There’s all of these activities you can do, and I dress up as a girl Viking. And I always make something. So this year, I decided to make a Viking dress and I made a bow and arrow. So, since there was a History Competition, I thought maybe I should put it in, because I love teaching other people how to do things.
(**Note: This instructable is written by CreativeRumi, a student who is nearly 8. I am her mother and I give my permission for her to enter this competition, in the Middle Ages category.)
Supplies
- Dark-coloured yarn
- Shiny ribbon (or whatever kind you want)
- Black masking tape
- Hot glue gun
- Sticks (one bendy, and three stiff ones)
- Paper
- String
- Strong scissors
- 3 toilet paper tubes. (I know what you’re thinking. “Toilet rolls??”)
- Small piece of cardboard
- Needle
Bow
- I carved two little slots with my scissors. (It’s actually easier than I thought it would be. They’re actually kids scissors and they’re really easy).
- Then you want some thick sewing string.
- Then, you want to get your thick string, and ask someone to bend the stick while you’re tying it, if you want to (or, you can just keep it straight). Then, you tie the string on in the slot. And since we have some extra, we wrapped the extra around in the slot so it could be more secure.
- We tied both ends.
Arrows
- Firstly, you’ll want to cut the sticks carefully to the same length
- When you make arrows, you need little points at the end of your stick. Usually people use feather. But since bird flu is going around right now, we’re not touching any feathers! We wanted to use paper, because we didn’t have any colourful feathers. We’re using blue, but you can use whatever colours you want. (The only reason we’re using blue is because those are the only colours we have.)
- Firstly, we want to cut parallelograms. We need three for each arrow: nine in total, because 3+3+3 = 9. I’m cutting a rectangle. And then cut the corners off to make the parallelogram. Once you’ve done the first one, you can trace over to make the rest.
- Fold the longer edge of each one.
- Then, you want to get your hot glue. Put the hot glue inside the fold. Glue it to the stick.
- If you’ve looked at my Instructables, one of them will be the “Wave-Around Hair Wrap.” If you look at that, we’re doing the same kind of knot, just with yarn and a stick.
- So firstly you want to make a number 4. Go around the back. Grab the string from the back, and pull it through. And pull it up, up, up. Then pull it tightly, and you have it.
Quiver
- So now you want to grab your three toilet paper rolls (or two, however many you want), and then tape them together with black tape. I only used black tape, because it makes it look more realistic, and it makes it look like leather, as you can see in the pictures.
- Now, you want to repeat that same step, only all over it. Because then it will be covered.
- The bottom may be a little tricky (well, I found it tricky), because I couldn’t cut out an exact circle, and I ended up cutting an oval. But then it actually fit. And I just attached it and covered it with tape.
Attaching the Ribbon
So now you want to get your ribbon, and at the top you want to fold it into a triangle shape on both ends. And then sew or tape it on to the quiver. I taped it to make it quicker. But if you want to be really good at it, you can sew it on with thick thread. You can put the tape on a few times so it’s really secure.
Almost Finished!
Now you want to grab the arrows and the quiver and you can put them in. Whenever I wear it, they keep on falling out because they’re not secured in any way, so I taped the arrows into the quiver.
Finishing Step
Finally, you will have a lovely bow and arrow! Just to give you a little hint: it’s from the Vikings.
