"W-EDGE: Sit. Read. Repeat."
Forget boring four-legged chairs. "W-frame" chair is a great example of minimalist woodworking, combining a seating area with built-in storage.Unlock the potential of a single sheet of plywood with this modern, geometric chair. Designed with a unique "W" shaped base, this project serves a dual purpose: a sturdy, minimalist seat and a built-in bookshelf. Its interlocking design showcases the beauty of raw wood grains and sharp angles, making it a perfect statement piece for any reading nook or balcony.
Supplies
- Plywood: 19mm thickness.
- Power Tools: Circular saw (with guide), hand drill, and an angle grinder with a sanding disc.
- Hand Tools: Hammer, measuring tape, pincers, and a marking pen.
- Hardware: Wood nails or screws and wood adhesive (glue).
- Finishing: Sandpaper (varying grits) and wood sealant.
Digital Prototyping in AutoCAD
Before touching the timber, the entire chair was conceptualized and drafted using AutoCAD. This digital phase allowed us to calculate the exact angles and load-bearing points of the "W" frame.
- Precision Drafting: Using AutoCAD, we established a total height of 3'-6" and a seating height of 1'-5" to ensure ergonomic comfort.
- Angle Optimization: The software helped determine the specific Radius (R1") for the internal peaks, preventing structural stress.
- The "W" Geometry: We mapped the base into two distinct wedges—an 11" rear and a 9" front—to create perfectly balanced storage nooks.
- Plan View Accuracy: Every component, including the 2' width and the 3/4" material thickness, was verified in the digital "Plan" view before the first cut was made.
Planning and Marking
Start by measuring and marking your plywood sheets. You will need three main sections:
- The Backrest: A long rectangular piece.
- The Base (W-Frame): Two large V-shaped assemblies that create the "W" support.
- The Seat: A flat square or rectangular piece that locks everything together.
Sanding the Edges
Before assembly, use an angle grinder with a sanding disc to smooth out the rough edges and corners. This prevents splinters and gives the chair a professional, "factory-finished" look.
Cutting the Angles
Using a circular saw, cut the plywood panels. To achieve the "W" shape, the edges must be cut at precise angles (mitre cuts) so they sit flush against the floor and against each other.
Tip: Use a guide rail to ensure your long cuts are perfectly straight.
Creating the Interlocking Slots
To make the chair stable without excessive hardware, use an interlocking joinery method.
- Measure the thickness of your plywood.
- Cut a slot halfway through the backrest and a corresponding slot in the seat panel
Assembly & Joinery
The Backrest: Slide the backrest into the pre-cut slot of the seat.
Join the Bottom Panel
Join the bottom panels to form the "W" shape using wood glue and nails.
Final Finishing
Once assembled, do a final round of hand-sanding with fine-grit sandpaper. You can leave the wood raw for an industrial look or apply a clear varnish to protect it from moisture and stains.
The "Book-Nook" Integration
Why have a separate bookshelf? The "V" cavities created by the base serve as a natural library. Your favorite books stay tucked neatly under your seat, making it the ultimate "all-in-one" reading station.
Features of the Design
- Built-in Storage: The "V" cavities under the seat act as a natural rack for books and magazines.
- Ergonomics: The tilted backrest provides comfortable support for long reading sessions.
- Compact Footprint: Fits easily into small corners while providing high visual impact.
Final Outcome
The W-EDGE stands as a testament to modern engineering. By starting with a precise AutoCAD blueprint, we transformed raw plywood into a functional library throne that is as stable as it is stylish.
In every angle of the W-EDGE, there is a purpose. The dual V-shaped storage nooks ensure that wisdom is always within reach, while the interlocking joints remind us that the strongest structures are those that fit together perfectly. A seat for the body, a home for the mind.✨🌱
