Homemade Water Filter

Welcome to this instructable on how to make a water filter. This project will show you how simple it is to clean dirty water.

*Age 8 and up

*Parental guidance is recommended because the use of scissors are required.

Supplies

You can locate the following materials at your local pet store.

  • 2 Water bottles
  • Sand
  • Gravel
  • Activated carbon
  • Gauze pad
  • Rubber-band
  • Scissors

Cut Water Bottles

Cut the 2 water bottle at the marked lines.

Wrap Gauze

Secure the gauze to the mouth of the longer bottle with a rubber-band.

Pour Sand

Pour 2 inches of sand from the mouth of the bottle

Pour Activated Carbon

Pour 1/2 inch of activated carbon on top of the sand.

*The purpose of using the carbon is to get rid of the harmful bacteria.

Pour Gravel

Pour 1 inch of gravel on top of the activated carbon.

Pour Dirty Water

Pour the dirty water and stop before you reach the top of the filter.

Congratulations, you have successfully turned dirty water into clean water.

*It is recommended to not drink the water, for this is only for demonstration purposes. It is a filter not a purifier.
