Wooden Mushrooms
I've recently started wood turning at Techshop. I'm still far too much of a novice to write up a step-by-step but I've enjoyed turning these mushrooms. My most recent attempt is the main image -- hopefully there's some sort of progression as I learn more!
The large flat mushroom was douglas fir (which is very cheap for practice), the others are walnut, which is a very nice wood to turn. To be honest, I don't feel like I've got that much out of trying to turn a soft wood like douglas fir; turning a hardwood like walnut or maple is much easier and a lot more satisfying.
