Working Medieval Gatehouse: Functional Drawbridge With Twin Towers

This project involves the design and fabrication of a functional scale model of a medieval castle gatehouse featuring two circular towers, a central wall, and a working drawbridge. The project integrates multiple manufacturing processes, including lathe, milling, drilling, and hand tool operations. Extra operations were performed in the process by requirement.

Supplies

Materials Used:

  1. Two aluminum rods, cut into “cap” and “bottle” parts
  2. A sheet of aluminum, cut into three separate pieces (all 4 mm thick and 100 mm long, one about 200 mm long while other two about 160 mm long)
  3. Steel screws and nuts.

Machines/Tools used:

  1. Lathe Machine (facing, turning, grooving, chamfering, knurling, drilling, boring, threading)
  2. Milling Machine (slotting)
  3. Drilling Machine (drilling, boring)
  4. Hand Tools (hacksaw, files, sandpaper, hammers, screwdrivers)
  5. Measuring Tools (Vernier caliper, depth gauge, steel rule, try square)

Create a 3D CAD Model

Create a 3D CAD model of the medieval gatehouse assembly to visualize the final product and verify fit and function before fabrication.

Fabricate Twin Towers

Fabricate cylindrical towers using lathe operations; add precision grooves using milling operations; and create blind holes using drilling operations.

Fabricate Central Wall

Fabricate the central wall using hand tools and a power hacksaw.

Fabricate Drawbridge

Construct a drawbridge using hand tools.

Fabricate Mechanical Linkages

Perform drilling and tapping operations for assembly and mechanical linkages. This prevents us from having to weld our components together.

Assembly

Assemble all components into a fully functional, manually operated model.
