Wooden Lock Box

this tells you how to make a nice 8x8x51/2 box. this is the size of this one. the size can be modified though. same steps just cut different sizes.

Planing

Draw a plan for what size pieces you will need if making it a different size. This one takes. 2 5/8 pieces sides. 2 5x7 pieces other sides.1 7x7 piece for the bottom. 1 8x8 piece for the lid.

Cut the boards to the desired size following the plan. The wood I used was 1/2 inch thick but use whatever size you want. It may need to be planed down.

Finishing

Sand the boards smooth then put on desired stain if you want. Then put on 3 varnish layers any shade you want. These steps only needs to be done to the side of the boards that will be facing in. if you want to do both sides now.

Makeing the Top

Glue and nail the sides together and the bottom between the sides.
Screw on the hinges to the top first then the bottom.

Making Lock Slot

rub some chaulk on the lock bar to mark spot chizel this out with a gouge or chizel checking it untill it is dddp enough be sure to leave at least 1/2 the thicknes of the board.if needed file the metal down some.

Finishing Touches

If desired add a chain, string, slide bar. Or (leather like I did) find where you want it to stop opening hold it then staple it in. this keeps the lid from flopping over.
